Next Community Meeting: Monday, March 24th at 7PM, South Austin Recreation Center.
July 1st 2024 Patriotic Porch Recap
It was great to see so many faces from the community at the annual Patriotic Porch Party, both familiar and new, where we celebrated our independence and recognized the importance of voting rights with this year’s theme: Get Out the Vote!

Hosted by Rolando Piña of Galindo and attended by Special Guest US Congressman Lloyd Doggett, the event started off with a sage cleansing performed by Michael Flores from the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. This was a particularly poignant moment as American Indians and Native Alaskans are celebrating the 100th year anniversary of the signing of the Snyder Act into law by President Calvin Coolidge. The signing of the Snyder Act granted them citizenship and thereby the right to vote.
Drawing the crowd in close, we were then addressed by Rep. Doggett. Among his remarks, Doggett emphasized the grave importance of the Supreme Court ruling that had been released the very same day regarding presidential immunity. Then, he spent time afterwards meeting one on one with members of the community.
The program also featured former Mayor Pro Tem Jackie Goodman, Mayoral candidate Kathie Tovo, District 4 City Council candidate Monica Guzman, and GENA President Patty Sprinkle, who all spoke about the importance of community and representation.
To sum up the event, Jackie couldn’t have put it any better when she said, “Community is democracy. Without democracy we have nothing.”

Special Thanks to the community who attended and helped make this happen by assisting with organization, food, and supply donations. Notably: Ricardo Garza, Mary Cullinane, and Patty and Sev Coursen.
